Chocolate vine (Akebia quinata)
Chocolate vine (Akebia quinata) also known as five leaf akebia,i s a vanilla scented vine that is very hardy in our climate.mature plant can reach up to height of 15 to 20 feet easily.
it grows rapidly and covers trellis or support easily.it produces beautiful flowers in march which are of lilac color.since its growth rate is very fast so it is very useful to cover the arbors, trellises, pergolas and fences.even it can cover a wall or roof easily. mature plants produce fruit which is edible but to get fruit more than one plant is necessary for proper pollination.it grows very well in full sun but prefers a partially shaded spot .it feels better with protection from the afternoon heat.its five leaf foliage is also very attractive and creates a beautiful view in garden
it grows best in loamy soil with proper drainage and high content of organic matter.
precaution for chocolate vine….
if given proper growing conditions it can it can be invasive so you will need to control the akebia plant with regular pruning. its fast growth rate has a tendency to dominate the landscape and it can easily overpower small plants.
although chocolate vine is drought resistance but it thrives well with regular watering.its propagation is very easy in monsoon with cuttings and air layering etc.to get plenty of blooms a light dose of NPK before spring is very beneficial.i am growing successfully this vine from previous 6 years. here are few snap shots of this spring…
