Care Tips for Amaryllis
Amaryllis/Hippeastrum care throughout year
due to its bold and colorful flowers every one want to grow amaryllis in his garden.i am growing amaryllis since 2013 and during this time i have learnt a lot about its growing conditions, fertilization and watering plan.done many experiments to achieve better results.some were successful and some failure.in this post i will try to discuss in detail life cycle of amaryllis for a complete year for new comers who want to grow amaryllis in their garden.
End of Dormancy:(spring season)
the best time for ending dormancy here in Pakistan is half of February, but it can vary from the beginning of December until the end of April. if bulbs were lifted from pots during winter dormancy then it is advised to plant them back in end of January. the amaryllis bulbs starts growing spontaneously when temperature rises., for better growth they should be transferred to a pot with approximately 2.5 cm of free space on both sides and at a height that extends 1/2 to 2/3 above the surface of the substrate. beware press them firmly otherwise With a large bloom, the entire plant could be collapse. The weight of one flowering stalk can reach up to 350 g so Attaching a stick is sometimes necessary. according to my experience best potting mix is 2:1: 1 (clay:sand:compost:). The mixture should be slightly acidic in the range 6-6.8. Today many potting mixes are available in market which can be used.for better drainage Put coarse river sand, perlite or other similar drainage material in the bottom of flower pot, . Drainage protects roots from rot because they need oxygen .for amaryllis bulbs after winter sleep clay pots are Preferred for their self-regulating ability evaporation qualities..it is advised to avoid the excessive moisture of the substrate.
The amaryllis bulbs will be exposed to light at room temperature when temperature reaches 20-23 c., for better growth they can be shifted to a warm place . Usually warmth, sun and water will encourage it to grow new leaves and flower buds. Initially water need is very less just water once in a week during month of February. If we started to water intensively as soon as we found out the hint of growth and any sign of awakening there is risk of rotting or even dying bulbs, because It is unable to consume excess water and the amaryllis bulb stops growing. start watering regularly Only when the flower bud is already visible and new leaves begin to grow. During growing season it is always necessary to observe the moisture of the potting mixture and water accordingly for example once every two or three days until the surface of the clay dries to a depth of 1 to 2 cm.
Never pour water on the tip of the bulb.
care during bloom period :
Depending on the planting season and the temperature, the amaryllis blooms in 1 to 3 months during February till April or some times till may.. when amaryllis start a bud it is advised to keep an eye on growth of stem because it turns towards light source so it is necessary to turn pot clock wise occasionally other wise flower stem will bent down and bloom will be destroyed. Some amaryllis hybrids grow leaves and flower stalks so high that they can begin to bend under their weight, then it is better to straighten them with help of stick to tie them so that the flower does not break under its weight.if you not want to get seeds then after Blooming stalks must be removed as soon as possible to avoid unnecessary plant propagation. it is better to cut the stalk at 3 to 4 inches and let it dry, when dried completely then pluck it out politely. if you are interested to get seeds then it is advised to remove pollen sacks from anthers as soon as flower opens to avoid self pollination
Summer Season :
during summer keep amaryllis bulbs in full bright Location: After flowering when the new leaves begin to grow the amaryllis bulbs gradually need moisture so continue watering on daily basis or when you feel that medium is drying. . Amaryllis is a subtropical plant that needs extended vegetation growth, which should take approximately 8 months so it is necessary to give them ample light in summer season. In the average home there is not enough light and therefore the bulbs need sunshine during the summer. amaryllis bulbs can withstand even stronger sunlight that benefits them. On the other hand, in full sun during June,July the sun heat may be too much and as a result there is sometimes yellowing and drying of leaves, especially when the plant is attracted to direct sunlight. In rainy weather it is better to put the amaryllis pots on a dry sheltered place. A hot weekend without water will not hurt, but will cause damage and rotting in wet soil for longer periods of time, and these conditions will increase susceptibility to various parasites as well as fungal, infectious and fungal diseases.
during growth season it is necessary to start fertilizing to grow enough nice leaves. The leaves create the ingredients necessary for the bulb by photo synthesis, which imposes them to bloom again in the next year. The bulbs should grow by about 1cm in diameter per year. Older bulbs no longer change the size. for better growth it is advised to fertilize fortnightly with dilute solution of 20-20-20 NPK.if NPK is in liquid type than add 2 ml in 10 litter water or in case of powder form add 1 teaspoon full in 10 litter water and drench pots completely.. best fertilizer is higher with phosphorus and potash but not recommended for newcomers.. There are many fertilizers available for indoor plants or special fertilizers are also avail available like tomato fertilizer which can be used.but key to healthy and safe fertilization is that always start with low potency and concentrated to avoid any damage to expensive plants. In the first half of the vegetation growth time, bulbs take especially the nitrogen needed for the growth of green plant parts. In the second half of the vegetation, since the beginning of June, the intake of phosphorus and potassium is increased, which promotes the growth of bulbs.
Autumn winter season :
amaryllis is getting ready for winter dormancy and Vegetative tranquility: with autumn coming in the month of September, when the oldest marginal leaves begin to slowly start yellowing it is advised to decrease the water and stop fertilizing. to accelerate the slow yellowing of the leaves by further removing the moisture until leaves completely dry out .Let the bulbs sit in the pots, and keep them in the dry season from October to January to February in a dry location, even dark (not necessary) with a temperature of 8-14 o C. . Ideal is 10 o C. Rest for at least three months. At that time, the amaryllis bulbs may not be watering at all. Recommended at least once a month, to avoid rotting .water is necessary to retain the moisture of bulbs otherwise without moisture bulbs will shrink during dormancy, Some growers uproot the bulbs in the fall season in October or early November (depending on location and temperature) wash their roots and cut bulbs’s neck with sharp knife .next they dip bulbs in fungicide solution and store bulbs in dark dry room.during storage bulbs are occasional investigated for parasites, diseases or rot.if bulbs are kept in pots during dormancy than it is advised to check bulbs by shaking them if bulb is easily uprooted then it is checked thoroughly for any problem, examine their roots, healthy roots are white.others dried, rotten , and sick are removed. If everything is OK, the bulb can be returned to the pot with new medium .
