Machala is a very delicate cybister type amaryllis. Its shape has resemblance with amaryllis lapaz. i got this bulb as a mislabel from royal colors.it was supposed to be amaryllis rio negro.but when it bloomed i was mesmerized to see its beauty and delicate shape..it is an old cybister variety which is not available in market and i was lucky that i got it as a mislabel from royal colors.it behaves like species amaryllises and its growth rate is very high. in 3 years time period i have more than 20 offsets from single bulb. machala is a good addition in my hippeastrum collection. So for so its performance is very good, but in previous years it never produced any viable seeds.in 2017 it produced healthy seed pods but when they opened after ripening they were not viable but only chaff. this year i have pollinated it with papilo and seeds pods are in good condition….may be this year i will be successful in getting few viable seeds.if this cross succeeds than seedlings will be something special. eye catching shape of papilio and cybister style of machala will create beautiful specimens…fingers crossed…..
