Gardening and Monsoon
after severe heat and dry weather when monsoon arrives in subcontinent every one takes a sigh of relief.monsoon is sign of revival and new birth…although in Pakistan monsoon is not that much heavy like in India and other subcontinent countries but it is sufficient for necessary needs of dry earth.monsoon is less in Pakistan because it reaches Pakistan after crossing all Indian states and at the end it enters in Pakistan..this year onset of monsoon was a little bit late in Pakistan. pre monsoon rains started in Pakistan after mid June but only one or two short spells occurred. at last in last days of June much awaited monsoons arrived in Pakistan and good rains poured in whole country.
rainy season is very important and enjoyable for a gardener.it is a busy time plants growth rate increases and plants become healthy and lush green. grass rejuvenates and occupies empty areas.weeds start to emerge like hair of head.monsoon has good impact on almost all type of plants except few plants like adeniums, vinca and zinnias.. water logging is main problem in monsoon keep an eye on pots for water logging. sometimes heavy downpour brings disaster and water stays in plants for few days.it is very dangerous because when rain stops and sun shines then water becomes very hot and plants are burned with hot and humid air.sometimes roots are rotten due to excess water…. it mostly happens in beds which are down from ground level and pots which have no drainage holes..plastic pots are also very susceptible to water logging.summer season is suitable for plant growth but few plants continue to bloom in summer season.rain lilies and silver leaves Texas sage… it is interesting that Texas sage blooming is known as rain sign because before rain it starts forming flower buds and profusely blooms during monsoon.during monsoon season Texas sage in full bloom along road side is a common view.rain lily(zephyranthes) and habranthus suddenly burst out with flower buds after rain.perhaps they wait for rain and as soon as rain occurs they start blooming.
Rainy season is best time for plant propagation…almost every type of plants can be rooted in this weather because moisture in air increases and cuttings easily make roots. specially tip cuttings make roots easily.i have planted tip cuttings of passiflora scarlet flame and hibiscus double.
